Brian Rush - Rush Custom Callers

Meet the Maker: Brian Rush of Rush Custom Callers

In a small rural town in upstate New York, Brian Rush has spent the last seven years turning a simple hunting hobby into a full-time livelihood. As a meticulous carpenter with his own woodshop, Brian began experimenting with making his own calls after a memorable deer season. What started as DIY curiosity quickly became Rush Custom Callers - a shop dedicated to crafting premium, one-of-a-kind game calls.

Every call Brian builds is made by hand, one at a time, on a wood lathe. What sets his work apart is not just the craftsmanship, but the quality control: “My eyes, my hands, and caliper measurements.” He personally turns and tunes every call before it leaves his shop. Each call also features a replaceable reed, much like an instrument. As Brian puts it, “When the reed goes bad you don’t throw out the saxophone, you replace the reed.”

Brian primarily works with select exotic and domestic lumber, much of which he mills himself, along with resin and pigments that create unique appearances. This DIY approach ensures he controls the entire process, from raw material to finished piece.

Balancing work and family life is one of the biggest challenges, but hunting is more than a pastime for Brian and his family, it’s a way of life, a means of sustenance, and now, a livelihood. Selling his work on platforms that support American craftsmen is something he’s proud of: “Quality… and not mass production made by the lowest bidder.”

In today’s world of mass production, AI, and 3-D printing, Brian sees craftsmanship as more important than ever: “It is even more important for the craftsman to stand out in society today.” His guiding principle is the same one he passes down to his daughters: “Don’t suck at it and be aware of your surroundings.”

His advice for the next generation of craftsmen? Don’t suck at it.

At Comstock Trading Company, we’re proud to feature Brian and his work. A true American craftsman making high-quality game calls the right way.
